Mixed trend was witnessed in the open market on Thursday as the rupee lost five paisa on the buying counter at 59.50 versus the dollar, while it maintained its level on the selling side at 59.55, respectively. The rupee managed to hold its overnight level in terms of the dollar due to balanced demand and supply of the greenback, dealers said. The rupee shed 10 paisa more versus the euro for buying and selling at Rs 77.50 and Rs 77.80, moneychangers said. As a result of the euro's gain against the dollar in the international markets, it also started showing gradual rise versus the rupee in the local market, they added.

The dollar slipped in the world markets, failing to capitalise on Federal Reserve Chairman Alan Greenspan's indication that the previous day that US interest rates would continue to rise, overseas dealers observed.

INTERBANK RATES: The rupee firmly held its overnight levels versus the dollar for buying and selling at 59.37 and 59.39 on comfortable supply of dollars, dealers said.
